It is easy to get a hole in a wall made of drywall. Here is how you can do a good job repairing that drywall. You will need a bit of window screen, joint compound, sand paper, paint, piece of drywall, thumb tacks, wire, small piece of wood, and a putty knife.

1) The first step is to clean up the hole you are wanting to patch. This means tearing away the paper that is flapping from the hole.

2) Cut a piece of window screen one half inch larger than the hole you are trying to patch. If your hole is larger than ten inches across at one point do not use window screen, use another portion of drywall to fill in the hole. To prepare, make the hole perfectly square by drilling holes around it and using a jigsaw to make the damage location into a square hole. Cut a piece of drywall to perfectly fit into this square hole and then proceed to the next step.

3) If the hole is being repaired with the screen, cover the hole with the screen and use two thumb tacks to secure it so it will not move. If you are repairing with a piece of drywall go to the sixth step in this tutorial.

4) Put the joint compound on a drywall knife or putty knife and smear it on the screen. Be careful not to get it everywhere. Smear it on until you reach the intact portion of the wall. Make sure the screen is covered totally with the joint compound. Let it dry.

5) After drying, take out the thumb tacks and proceed to repeat step four. Again, let the compound dry.

6) When this is dry again, use sandpaper to take down the high portions of your repair. Get it as level as you can. Blow off the dust and paint it to match the undamaged section. If you are using a piece of drywall to repair the hole make sure it is a perfect fit. Do not install it into the hole yet. Use a nail or similar object to put a hole in the center of your repair piece. Put wire through the hole and make a knot on the side that will be inside the wall. The knot should be large enough to prevent the wire from coming back through the hole. Use a material such as a flat piece of wood and insert it into the hole in the wall and tie the wire to the flat piece of wood, using the end that has the knot in it. Put epoxy or other strong glue on the flat piece of wood to hold the wood to the back side of the undamaged drywall and also to the piece you are using to repair the hole. Guide the repair piece into the hole. Let the glue dry.

7) After drying, cut the wire off. Make it very short, as short as you can. Use a nail or other object to push the wire into the hole in the repair patch. Apply some joint compound over this repaired area and extend the compound to about half an inch past the former hole. Make it as level as possible without bumps. If you have bumps, sand them down and then blow or wipe away the dust. Prime and paint the area and you are done.
