This day and age with houses made of lightweight materials it is good to discover ways to counter act the effects of a fire. Learn how to fireproof things in your home with a simple mineral; borax. You will need; borax, boric acid, and a pressurized spray bottle.

1) The first thing you will need to do is prepare your boric acid mixture. You can buy boric acid at a grocery store, Krogers, or a gardening store. You will need to put four cups of borax with water and add heat until it boils, or around 212 degrees. While the boric acid is heating up, stir it. When it reaches the boiling point turn the temperate down to medium and let the boric acid cool for two minutes.

2) Add one cup of borax ( this is dry boric acid ) to the previous boric acid you heated up. Keep pouring new borax into the boric acid until it can soak up no more borax. The mixture is still warm at this point.

3) Remove the heat. Put the boric acid mixture in the pressurized spray bottle with a good pump handle while the boric acid is still warm. Pressurize the sprayer with the handle.

4) Spray this mixture on all construction material that is flammable. Wood, fiber, and any other material you know can catch fire are your targets. The amount of boric acid you have should cover one thousand square feet of material.

5) Allow the surfaces you sprayed to dry. If you sprayed wood surfaces they will begin to look aged. This is normal. If you have wood that you do not want to have this effect, do not spray it with borax. If you have wood that is close to fire sources, spray them more heavily.

Borax is deadly at increased levels. Keep this mineral away from pets and kids. Borax works even with just a little clinging to the surface of the item it is protecting. Ten pounds of borax and five pounds of boric should be enough to treat a whole house. It is a good idea to do this fireproofing while the house is being built for maximum benefit.
