Wood paneling was a great idea, but it seems drywall has taken its place. Use these instructions to paint over wood paneling the right way. You will need; wood primer, paint, brushes and something to cover the furniture.
1) The first step is to use wood primer. If you choose one of the less smelly ones, it will be the water based primers. Apply this to all the panels you plan on painting. The first thing to do is remove imperfections in the panels and remove any old paint. Use sandpaper for the small stuff and then use wood filler if your sanding is extensive. You may want to move the furniture before you start priming the panels. Consider leaving part of the paneling unpainted to obtain a country look to your home. Leaving the bottom one third unpainted and installing trim can accomplish this.
2) Choose your paint. If you are painting in the bathroom, it is more humid there and you will need to make sure you use a semi gloss or a gloss paint.
3) You can do most of the work with a roller, but not all of it. You will need to buy a one and half inch brush to get the job done right. Choose a good quality brush that does not have stray bristles in it.
4) The primer will need to be dry before you can begin to apply the first coat of paint. Once is it dry, paint a small out of the way surface of the paneling. How does it look ? If you are seeing problems, you might want to try a different type of paint. If water based does not work try the enamel based. Once you are sure the paint is going to do well on the paneling, you can finish the rest.
5) The grooves in between the board will need to be painted with the brush. Do not use too much paint in the grooves and remember you can always make thin coats to cover the color of the paneling. Making thick coats with a brush is likely to cause drips and streaks. Use some patience and your work will turn out well.
6) After the paint is dry all the way, replace the furniture in the room if you took it out and enjoy the look of your new paint.
