Remove stains, dirt, moss and mildew from your decking
If your decking is looking a bit dirty, stained or suffering from moss or mildew growth; it's probably time to give it a good clean
1.
Using a sweeping brush, remove any leaves or debris from the decking. Dislodge dirt from corners and crevices, using a scraper or knife.
2.
Connect a garden hose and use it to thoroughly wash the decking. Ensure you get in all of the corners and wash away any remaining debris or dislodged dirt.
3.
If the decking is not heavily stained, using a strong household cleaner, scrub with a firm brush to remove any moss and dirt. Using the garden hose rinse thoroughly. If your decking is stained, move onto the following steps.
4.
For stubborn stains, you may need to use a strong bleach or commercial deck cleaner. In this case, ensure any surrounding lawn, shrubs, plants or furniture are covered and protected from potential spray.
5.
In a plastic bucket, make a solution of 250 ml bleach to 4 liters of warm water. If using a commercial deck cleaner, follow the directions for application. Always cover your skin, wear gloves and safety goggles when using bleach or chemicals, especially when using a hand brush to scrub.
6.
Scrub the cleaner or bleach solution into the decking using a stiff brush; you will have to use a hand brush to get into the corners and to remove stubborn stains.
7.
Using the garden hose wash off the cleaner or bleach solution and any remaining dirt. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear from the decking.
8.
If the decking is affected by mildew, apply a strong bleach solution, or neat vinegar, to the area. After a few minutes, thoroughly wash off.
If the decking is looking extremely weathered, it might be time to re-stain and seal.
1.
Allow the decking to dry, it must be completely dry before you attempt to stain it. It should be left to dry again after the stain has been applied and again after the sealant. Typically 24 hours is required for each drying period, so check the weather forecast before starting this job!
2.
After choosing your stain, apply with a brush making sure you brush the stain well into the grain.
Once dry (approximately 24 hours) you can apply the sealant.
Again, the best method of application is a brush. Ensure you apply the sealant liberally on the ends of the wood to prevent moisture entering.
To extend the life of your decking, it should be cleaned and treated once a year. This will not only prevent premature decaying but also ensure it remains an attractive garden feature.
